SBM COACH NANCI E. GLINDMYER DESCRIBES A REWARDING COACHING EXPERIENCE WITH A RETIREE

My greatest success story was helping an individual achieve her goal of retirement at age 62. When Christine first met me in July 2013 she had a goal of retiring by her 62nd birthday, only five months away. She wanted to implement a plan that would boost her poor credit, develop a monthly budget, and begin to save. We met monthly and Christine was diligent about following through with suggestions to help reduce her debt, improve her credit, and open a savings account. Christine was able to retire by her target date and now has more disposable income retired than when she was working full time. […]

SUCCESS STORY: ISWEDCY DE JESÚS

So what does financial empowerment look like? Our client Iswedcy de Jesús can explain. Iswedcy de Jesús thought she was doing well by paying all her expenses in cash. The immigrant from the Dominican Republic has always preferred to purchase or consume only what she could actually pay for out of pocket. She didn’t realize that to build wealth in the United States, she also needed to build a credit history. That’s when José Martinez, a $tand By Me® coach, came into the picture. Within a few months, the 36-year-old de Jesus received a $500 loan, which she paid off in three installments. […]

SBM COACH JUDE LISZKIEWICZ HELPS A CLIENT WITH OUT-OF-CONTROL SPENDING

I worked with a customer who was very concerned that she needed to file bankruptcy and borrow from her retirement plan as a result of out-of-control credit card debt. When we first met, she was certain that there was no hope for her situation. Together we reviewed her debts carefully and created a spreadsheet that listed each balance, interest rate and due date. Seeing all of her debts in one place was overwhelming but allowed the customer to have an accurate picture of where to begin. […]

SBM AND STATE OF DELAWARE DEMONSTRATE BEST PRACTICES IN FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT AT NATIONAL ASSET-BUILDING CONFERENCE

Delaware was well represented at a recent conference in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Corporation for Enterprise Development. The event focused on advances in cutting-edge strategies for asset building and economic development. Delaware Cabinet Secretary Rita Landgraf was a plenary speaker at the Assets Learning Conference. She spoke to a group of federal employees seeking ideas on how government can strengthen its involvement in this work. She was joined by high-ranking leaders in the Obama administration whose vision and goals on financial empowerment were much in alignment with those of Secretary Landgraf. […]

CHILD CARE FACILITIES ADD ONE MORE SUBJECT TO THEIR CURRICULUM: FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT

$tand By Me® is working with Head Start centers throughout Delaware, as well as with many private and nonprofit child care centers, to provide personal financial coaching to staff and families served by the centers. Four coaches, two of whom are bilingual in Spanish and one who is bilingual in Haitian Creole, are fanning out across the state to work with the centers. The Office of Early Learning and the Office of Childcare Licensing have worked with $tand By Me® to qualify program services within Delaware’s child care quality initiative, STARS, as either an employee benefit or a community service. This way, centers not only benefit by making these services available to their staff and families, but they also add value toward their quality rating. […]
