My customer Tanya is a single mom of five children. When she came to her first appointment, she shared that she didn’t like where she lived or the landlord she was renting from. Two of her children require extra care and need to have their own rooms.
Over the next few months, we reviewed Tanya’s credit report so that she could enroll in a firsttime home buyers program. However, in early March she received confirmation from Section 8 that she could rent a five-bedroom house, so she came to me to discuss rental housing options.
She was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to find a house she liked that would also take her rental voucher. Tanya decided to work with a realtor, and ended up finding a beautiful home in a wonderful location that accepted her voucher. She was worried about moving costs, so I suggested she compare prices and ask friends for help. In the end, she was able to negotiate a reasonable price with a moving company and got help with moving furniture from members of her church.
She is very happy with her new safer, more affordable living environment, and feels empowered to work on purchasing her own home in the next year or two. We’re currently working on improving her credit to make that dream a reality.
